“Psychological Distress of Older Chinese: Exploring the Roles of Leisure Activities, Social Support, and Subjective Social Status”

by Wei Zhang, UHM Sociology

Date: Wednesday, October 24
Time: 12:00 noon
Place: Moore Hall 319 (Tokioka Room)

Abstract: The goal of this research is to examine if the long neglected correlates such as leisure activities, social support, and subjective social status contribute to variations in psychological distress among older Chinese. Using data collected in one of the most developed areas in China—Suzhou city, Jiangsu province, we find that engaging in collective exercises, living with both spouse and adult children, providing support to other family members as well as perceived availability of social support from others are particularly beneficial for mental health whereas perception of relative deprivation and low life quality is detrimental to mental health of older Chinese. This work is among the first studies that comprehensively examined various important correlates of psychological distress and indicate the unique patterns of distress among the elderly in the most developed area in the contemporary China.

About the Speaker: Wei Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at The University of Hawaii, Manoa. Her research primarily focuses on Medical Sociology, Asian Americans, and Aging in China. Her recent articles appear in Social Science & Medicine, Health & Place, Sociology of Religion, Journal of Gerontology: Social Science, and Journal of Aging and Health.

*	*	*

The Fall 2012 China Seminars & Public Events are cosponsored by the Confucius Institute at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. All listed events are free and open to the public.
With the mission of celebrating Chinese choral music and China’s musical heritage, the Han Sheng Music Association (汉声合唱团) is a choral group specializing in Chinese choral music. It was founded by a group of enthusiasts for Chinese choral works in Honolulu, in the early 1970s. The group’s repertoire includes traditional and contemporary Chinese songs sung in several regional dialects.

Currently, the Association is under the directorship of Prof. Frederick Lau of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Music Department. The group performed in numerous Chinese and non-Chinese community functions and festivals. In recent years, Han Sheng has presented concerts annually at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Orvis Auditorium.

Dear UH Students in Chinese and Japanese Studies

This summer July 31 through August 17 (three weeks) our department will be hosting the first University of Tokyo-University of Hawai’i Summer Residential Institute in Comparative Philosophy. I am attaching the description and the tentative program for the Institute that includes the participation of several of the University of Tokyo’s most popular teachers. The Institute is a combination of thematic lectures and a close reading of core texts in Chinese and Japanese philosophy.

The costs for the Institute—the $100 application fee and the $300 program fee—will be waived for our own UH students who would like to join the group, and it is probable that we will have funding to cover some meals and social events.

Please let us know if you are planning to apply for this opportunity.

Greetings from Beijing!
The Center for East-West Relations (CEWR) at Beijing Foreign Studies University in Beijing, China is now accepting applications for the East-West Relations M.A. program to begin Fall 2012. This unique M.A. program focuses on the importance of culture in international diplomacy and international communication. The curriculum is constructed in a way to provide students with an understanding of the background assumptions and priorities that inform Eastern and Western policies and practices. All major courses will be taught in English, but students will be expected to participate in Chinese language courses during the two-year program.
We believe that this is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about culture in an international setting with some of the best scholars of comparative politics, philosophy, and culture.
Attached to this email, you will find the program brochure with a detailed outline of the curriculum, costs and application requirements. Information about the program can also be found on our website at www.cewr-china.com.
Please forward this information on to interested students. Thank you for your help in promoting this new program.

Sincerely,
Trenton Wilson
